Chapter 31 — The Accounts of Marcellus

The examiner came up with the first April barge: a gray, dry, folded man of the procurator's offices, who had examined in his time — he said it in his first hour, not as boast but as method, laying out his history the way he would presently lay out his weights — the accounts of a customs district in Narbonensis, two city treasuries in Tarraconensis, and a legion's camp chest on the Rhine, and had found the differences among them smaller than reputation held. He wanted a table with its length to the window, a lamp he had traveled with, the room cleared of all men but one to answer questions, and the four books.

He got the fiscal book of the collections, three years of it, delivery by delivery, with the quaestor's acknowledgments annexed. He got the civic book — the relief of the drought year, the wall-work, the grain bought and the grain owed, the festival subventions, the refugee roll of the mine spring opened and closed in form. He got the book of monies in passage, which he asked for second and read first, because — he said this too, plainly, a man who had no other conversation and had stopped regretting it — coin at rest is honest or it is not, but coin in motion is where commissions rot. And the fourth he asked for with a formula so worn it had no teeth left in it — where an officer of accounts keeps private moneys, it is usual — and Marcellus laid his personal accounts on the table before the formula was finished, under his own seal, and broke the seal himself in the examiner's sight, and put his household in evidence beside his commission: the estate at Corduba, Porcia's stewardship entered in her own exact figures, the hill parcel and its vines, the boy's schooling, the carriage paid on a heron letter if the man cared to look for it. The examiner noted the breaking of the seal without expression, which was, Marcellus came to understand across the six days, the man's one register of approval: what he did not remark, passed.

For six days Marcellus watched his own craft walk toward him across his own table.

The examiner heard the books against each other the way witnesses are heard, column against column, the civic against the fiscal, the passage-book against both, hunting not error but seam; he tried totals by the board with his own counters, which he kept in a fish-skin purse; he read rolls as objects — tilted the leaves against the window light, aged the inks with his eye, walked the traveling lamp along a subscription letter by letter the way a man walks a boundary he means to swear to. Marcellus knew every step. He had invented none of it and used all of it, three years ago, by night, on a dead man's beautiful rolls, and it had not once occurred to him in that August — this was the finding of the six days, and he entered it on the third of them, before the outcome, so that the outcome could not amend it — how the table would feel from the other end. There had been no one at the other end. That had been the whole horror, and, he saw now, the whole comfort: a hunter in an archive is alone with the dead and can believe what the hunt tells him. He sat at the answering end of his own method, alive, produced his leaves on request, and found the seat instructive past anything the year had taught him except the basilica of Corduba — which it resembled, he noted, as a well resembles a river: the same element, stiller, and you at the bottom of it.

On the fourth day the examiner found the error. Marcellus knew of it — an entry of the second year, two sesterces against the commission in the casting of a pagus total, caught at the year's close, corrected on its face, the correction initialed and dated. The examiner set the leaf under his lamp anyway and was quiet over it for the space of a long column.

"Honest men err against themselves," he said at last. "It is nearly a rule. The difficulty" — he turned the leaf face down with two fingers, the way Celer advanced a counter — "is that the cleverest of the other kind know the rule. I have twice in my life seen a book seeded with small losses the way a fowler baits a field." He looked at Marcellus without unkindness and without its opposite. "Nothing on paper proves a man, commissioner. Paper proves paper. But it reads well." And went on, and the sentence stayed at the table after him, doing its work on the one listener it had, who wrote it that night into the private register under the heading he kept for tools too sharp to leave lying about.

Celer's instruction had come up on the same barge as the examiner, and its first schedule closed the oldest open entry on the commission's books: the claim of the widow of Camalus, muleteer, killed upon the road in the Emperor's service in the November of the second year; compensation fixed at twelve hundred sesterces, a year of the man's hire, charged to the costs of the collection. Sixteen months the claim had stood as a documented liability, renewed in each season's accounts in the same line, because the fisc had no head under which a hired civilian's death was payable and had needed a year and a half to invent one; and now the head existed, created by instruction, and would outlive them all, and other widows in other districts would someday be paid under the heading his convoy had bought. He took the coin down to Portus Albus himself, with the clerk and two witnesses, and Chresimus gave them the station's inner room.

She came with the children because there was nowhere to leave them, and the smaller one hunted a mule's shadow along the quay-stones outside the door the whole time, audibly, the sound entering the proceedings like water under a floor. She counted the sum herself, aloud, in the up-valley way, her lips moving, stacking the silver in fives along the table's edge, and the room let her do it at her own pace, the clerk's pen waiting; and at the end she looked at the stacks and said, "It is right," and the word did all the work it could hold and left the rest standing where it stood. She made her mark where the clerk's finger showed. The clerk read her the writing: that all claims against the commission in the matter were thereby satisfied. Satisfied. The Latin of accounts has one word where the world needs two, and the room heard both of them inside it, and nobody moved for a moment; and then she gathered the coin into a cloth, and the cloth into her breast, and thanked the commissioner in the flat voice the vega used for the town's mercies, and went out onto the quay and took the small one's hand; and through the doorway Marcellus watched the child point at the mules and the mother look where the child pointed, and entered the acknowledgment that evening in form, and added nothing to it, there being nothing the form would carry.

The station's own books went under the traveling lamp that same afternoon and passed at the new farm — twenty-seven thousand now against the old twenty-four, the renegotiation of the second winter proving out in its third season — and Chresimus watched his life's arithmetic submit to the fish-skin purse with the serenity of a man whose margins had been remeasured rather than abolished, and sent his note up to Cardena two days later: The examiner weighs true, master. I have been weighed by worse and paid more for the privilege. The farm passes; I am dearer and cleaner, which is what renegotiation means when it is done between men who count. Iron sinks, talk floats; a clean book, I find, does neither — it sits in its rack, and lets a man sleep.

On the sixth day the examiner subscribed. The four books were closed and corded; the finding went onto a single leaf in the gray exact hand, and the leaf said that the accounts of the commission at Cardena had been examined and found in order.

Examined and found in order. Marcellus stood at the window with the copy while the examiner's boxes went down to the barge, and let the sentence finish arriving, because he had been waiting six days for it and it had come, as expected things do, wrong side first. He had heard it before, in this room, in the flat voice of the racks, the first August of his commission: dead, master. At Corduba, the year after the Capitol burned. His effects were sealed and his accounts were examined and found in order. Vibius Crescens had passed this examination. The identical formula had been subscribed over that tidy dead man by some earlier gray servant of the same offices, and it had not been corruption and it had not been carelessness; the accounts were in order; the order was the crime. Paper proves paper. The examiner had said it at this table like a man remarking on the weather, and had not known — why should he; the Fulvius matter was three racks away and none of his schedule — that he was pronouncing on the room's whole history, and on its keeper's.

So Marcellus stood with his acquittal in his hand and took the inventory of what he felt, the inventory being the one instrument he still trusted for interior work; and what he found was not pride. He went looking for the pride deliberately, the way the examiner had gone looking for the seam — it should have been there; a man three years building exactness, examined by exactness and confirmed, has earned the finding, and pride is the wage of earned findings — and where it should have stood he found instead a plain, breathable, enormous relief: the relief of a man whose proofs have held. Pride would have meant he believed the finding measured him. Relief meant he knew what it measured: the paper; only, ever, the paper. The whole distance between himself and the man whose hand he had learned by lamplight — the man of his own kind, the tidy mind that had sat at this table and chosen the other use for its happiness — lay in country no examiner would ever walk: the vega surveyed on foot, the oaths taken at the stone, the doors knocked at by daylight; and further in than that, past any instrument, the small unwitnessed morning room where a man decides, daily, without subscription, what his exactness is for. The examination could not go there. It was not built to. It had acquitted Vibius and it had acquitted him, in the same words, at the same table; the words were true both times; and between those two truths lay everything that mattered in his life, unentered, unenterable.

At the gangway the examiner paused over his boxes and offered the only unofficial sentence of his visit. "You keep a tidy hand, commissioner."

"So did my predecessor," Marcellus said.

The examiner considered it, decided — visibly, thriftily — that understanding was an expense the schedule did not carry, nodded, and went aboard; and the barge took the gray man and the four corded books down the brown river toward Corduba, and Marcellus walked back up to the tabularium through the spring smells, mud and blossom and tar, carrying the leaf.

Celer's letter came up eight days behind the finding, warm as the season, numbers in every paragraph: the finding noted with satisfaction; the compensation's discharge approved and the head of account confirmed against future need; the farm of Portus Albus commended in passing to its conductor's credit and the conductor reminded, in the same clause, that credit is a thing drawn against; and then, doing the letter's real work in the old style, the sentence that set the roof beam: demands upon the district would hereafter be settled against the return of its capacity, which this office holds from your own hand. From your own hand. The valley's ceiling and its floor alike stood at Corduba now in his own figures, and every future year of Cardena's obligations — under him, under his successor, under men unborn who would never walk the upper terraces — would be computed against the truth he had rendered in three cold evenings at the board. He read the clause twice, by his rule, and put the letter in the chest where the admonition of May and the commendation of October lay racked together, and it belonged there, being the third lesson of the same school.

The accounts are passed, he wrote that night. I looked for pride and found relief, and I have entered the relief, because it is the honest figure and it will not flatter me later. One instruction against the years ahead, when the formula is said of me again, in rooms I will not stand in, by men who never saw this valley: keep the books exact, and keep the difference somewhere the books cannot reach. There is no third instruction. I have looked, three years, in the best-kept room in Baetica. There are two.
