Chapter 26 — The Patron's Price

The acquittal aged into ordinary news in about an eight-day, which was the span Corduba allotted to other men's survivals, and Marcellus stayed on into July because the machinery he had set moving wanted feeding: the repair warrant to be executed, the engineer to be met, the season's letters to be answered from the city where answers traveled fastest.

The engineer was a spare, sun-blackened man of the procurator's offices who had built roads in three provinces and had the courtesy of his trade, which was to praise nothing but the drawings. He spread the petition's survey on the table between them — the breach measured rod by rod, the wreck of the cribs counted, the standing pine within a mile counted too — and worked through it with a stick of charcoal, grunting at intervals, and at the end he said: "You have done my first eight-day for me, commissioner. It is not often a man petitions with the answer annexed." And then, gathering the leaves, without looking up: "They say you argue with documents. Up at the offices they say it the way men say a thing they intend to try themselves." Government by making yes cheap: his craft was being learned from, at Corduba, by men who had never seen the valley. He examined the feeling this produced and could not, with strict entry-keeping, call all of it unease.

The letter from Rome came up with the mid-July post, in Caelius Firmus's own hand throughout, which was itself information: the senator kept secretaries the way the river kept boats.

The body of it was Rome, served in the urbane portions Caelius sized for provincials: the heat; the works on the temple the Emperor was raising to Peace; a marriage, a notable ruin, an epigram going around, its author denying it in a manner calculated to prove the attribution. A paragraph on the family's health. A courteous sentence for Porcia. One clause only that sat higher than the rest, placed mid-letter with the studied casualness of a stone laid where a wall would someday want a corner: the fashion at Rome this year is counting — offices are weighed, rolls are read, and a man with a clean return in his hand will find doors open that were not doors last year. No more than that. Marcellus read the letter once for its news and once for its architecture, which was how he had learned to read this correspondent, and found the architecture, as always, in the postscript.

P.S. — Gallus dined here the winter before he sailed; a careful man, mindful of his digestion. When your matter was put on, I wrote him a line — nothing you need think of; the sort of note one man writes another when a name they share comes up in company. You will not mention it and you will not thank me. To thank a man is to enter the thing in the accounts, and between us, Marcellus, there are no accounts kept — which you, of all men living, will know how to read. Serve me only in this: no surprises. Whatever must happen in your valley, I hear it from you before I hear it from anyone; a client who surprises his patron is a debt gone astray in the post, and I have never in my life left a debt astray. Finish your district. Finish it well and finish it soon. Men are being read this year, and I am asked, oftener than formerly, whether I know any provincials who can count.

He sat with it a long time in the emptied study, the shutters propped against the heat, the boy's voice somewhere in the court below reciting a game's small formulas to the porter's daughter.

He had kept the beneficia ledger in his head since he was twenty — everyone of his order kept it; it was the arithmetic under every dinner and every introduction and every letter of the well-born world: what was owed, to whom, in what coin, callable when — and he had prided himself, as a keeper of such accounts, on entering his own debts unflinchingly at full weight. He tried now to enter this one and watched the entry fail. There are no accounts kept between us. He had read the sentence at twenty-six as graciousness. He read it now as what it was: the clause that made the debt infinite. A sum entered can be discharged; that is what entry is for; the whole mercy of writing a debt down is that a written debt has edges. Caelius kept no accounts as the sea keeps no harbors — everything was received, nothing was ever paid off, and the interest was obedience, compounding, collected in postscripts. Macer, Marcellus thought, with the flat professional respect one instrument owes another, at least lent at rates a man could learn: the fever-man's one-in-ten was cruel and knowable, and the vega organized its whole life around knowing it. The great lending was gentler and had no rate. That was what made it great.

And the second clause, the operating clause, the one sentence in the whole urbane sheet that worked for its living: no surprises. I hear it from you before I hear it from anyone. He turned it over with the care he gave to warrant language, because it was warrant language. It did not ask him to lie; Caelius would never ask that; a lying client was bad surety. It asked him to report — to route the truth of his own life through Rome before the truth reached anyone else — to become, in the matter of Titus Aelius Marcellus, his patron's correspondent first and everything else second. The mandate on the pack-saddle two years ago had said he shall render account of all he does, and he had thought it the sentence that defined him to the fisc. Here was its twin, unsealed, unregistered, written in a hand that kept no accounts, and it defined him further up and further away, and there was no third sentence coming after which he would ever again render account only to himself.

He answered the same evening — a clean return: the acquittal on all heads, the admonition quoted exactly so that Rome should have its wording from him first, the repair granted, the capacity of the corrected district stated in one dry paragraph a senator could read aloud at dinner. No surprises. He was, the private register observed that night, learning the new mandate's clauses faster than he had learned the old one's.

Porcia came out to the porch on his last evening with the estate accounts under her arm, and they did the family's arithmetic together as they had done it every July of their marriage that geography had permitted, which made four Julys of six.

The hill parcel first, because it was their oldest joke and their oldest proof: not sold, in the bad spring when selling had looked like sense; the price recovered; the parcel now carrying vines in their third year. "You were right about the hill parcel," she said, in the voice with which she conceded the annual point, and he said, "I was right in a letter. You were right every day for five years," which was the whole truth and cost him nothing to say anymore, and she looked at him briefly the way she looked at a column that summed correctly on the first pass — pleased, and faintly suspicious of the ease.

Then the boy's schooling, begun; the press, mended; the oil, contracted forward at a price she named and he approved and they both knew she had not needed approved. The lamp drew its moths. Below in the dark court the fountain kept its small accounts aloud. And at the end, closing the tablets on her knee, not looking up, in exactly the voice in which she had reported the olive yield, she said:

"Your senator wrote to the proconsul."

"Yes."

"You didn't ask him to."

"No."

"No," she said. "That is how the good ones do it." She squared the tablets' edges. "I have watched this five years now, Titus, and I will tell you the shape of it, and then I will never say it again, because saying a thing twice is nagging and once is an accounting. When you were a district man, you had us, and we had you. Now the procurator answers for you, and the proconsul is written to about you, and the senator asks that he hear of you first. Every year the men who protect you are grander, and every year they are farther, and you cannot be nearer to them and to us at once — protection is distance, husband; that is what it is made of; it is the whole of what it is made of. They do not shelter you the way a roof shelters. They shelter you the way the high hills shelter the valley: by standing a long way off, and being large, and you living in their weather." She set the tablets in their box and latched it. "I married a man who counted olive trees from a barge. I correspond now with a commission. The exchange was not consulted with me, and I am not complaining of it — the commission writes a fair hand and its accounts are honest. I am telling you the price, because you of all men keep prices, and this one I have never once seen you enter."

She went in. He sat on the porch a long time with the lamp and the moths and did not go in behind her, and when at last he took out the private register he wrote the entry in her words and not his own, because his own would have softened it, and the register did not deal in softenings: protection is distance. It is the whole of what it is made of. Under it, after a while, he wrote the rest: acquitted by my own entries; protected by a letter I never read; owed for it a debt I am forbidden to enter. The mandate says: he shall render account of all he does. I have found the account I may not render, and it is the account of what the rendering costs.

He left for the valley two mornings later. At the first road-station, by lamplight, he wrote four lines in large plain letters to his son, who could not read them yet but had asked — to me? at the gate, with Porcia's level eyes — and would have them read to him by his mother until the day he read them himself: the river, the mules, a heron the barge had startled at the second bend, the promise to write again from Cardena. It was the easiest thing he had written in three years, and the hardest, and it went south in the morning's post with the rest of the correspondence of the Empire.

The road home ran down the great river and up the tributary — the same road, the other direction, two years and three months after a man on a barge had ridden down it ordering his ignorance.

From the deck he counted olive trees again, by fives, out of the old habit, where the groves ran along the banks in their quincunx order, and the count agreed with what the registers of those districts claimed, within the old part in twenty, exactly as it had agreed two years before; and he noted what had changed, which was not the trees and not the count but the counter. The agreement had comforted him then — the world and the page in accord, the satisfaction other men are said to find in music. Now it was merely correct. Somewhere between the two countings the music had gone out of agreement, and he did not know where it had gone to live; he watched the ranked trees go by, correct, and correct, and correct, the way a man reads a letter he once knew by heart, looking for what he used to feel in it.

At Portus Albus, Chresimus came out to the quay himself, which he did nowadays, and put the season's summary into his hands with the two-line note folded on top: The talk that came up crated in the spring went unsold and is written off to wastage. The renewal offers of April are withdrawn — the same houses, the same paper, the same courtesy, only backward. Paper is freight like anything else, master: when the market turns, the offers go back into the hold. The vega's credit is as it was — which is to say, his — but the register held its price through a proconsul's season, and the river has noticed. Iron sinks, talk floats, and a ruling, it appears, floats longer than talk. I have adjusted my stowage accordingly.

Then the mules, and his own valley, opening terrace by terrace in the amber end of the day, and here the counting changed under him without his willing it, because here the register had gone transparent. He could not see groves anymore; he saw entries, and through the entries, hearths. That stand of old olive above the second bridge carried the last season of a seed-debt he knew to the modius. Those terraces going gold above the channel were the Attenes', held in wax at Corduba, ninth in a queue that had wintered once and would winter again. The abandoned plots he had counted past thirty on this road once — land that paid tax to no one, land the registers did not know — he counted them again now and knew them by their causes: which had failed in the drought, which had fled to the port, which stood void under the correction awaiting a holder the law had not yet named. Two years ago he had ridden up this road believing the valley could be read like a document. He had been right. That was the thing no one had told him about being right: the reading did not stop. He knew too much now to see landscape; he would never see landscape again; and a boy — a different boy, the same patience — watched him past with the goats, the way one watches weather.

The town received him at dusk, and the racks stood in their order, and the third collection waited to be begun; and the last entry of the journey, made that night in the tabularium with the second lamp unlit, was one line: home, the register said. He let the word stand. It was the register's error, not his; and of the two of us, he wrote, the register and I, I no longer know which keeps the truer book — it counts me at Cardena, and Porcia's accounts count me at Corduba, and both are exact, and a man cannot be entered twice without one column somewhere standing empty.
