Extract, letter of commission, given at Corduba before the Ides of April in the third year of the Emperor Vespasian Augustus:

…Titus Aelius Marcellus, son of Titus, of the equestrian order, shall proceed to the district of Cardena and there make inquiry into the tabulae censuales, the registers of land and persons, and the accounts of monies owed and unpaid. He shall have power to inspect, to summon, to question upon oath, and to require of the magistrates and the ordo of Cardena all writings whatsoever touching the census and the revenues. He shall judge no cause, but shall refer what requires judgment to the proconsul's assize.
